An entire people will evacuate their island homes due to sea level rise

Climate change displacement has begun with the first five families leaving their home on the Carteret Islands, off the coast of Bougainville, which lies off the coast of Papua New Guinea. These small coral atolls are home to 2,600 people and life there has been made impossible recently due to an increase in frequency of spring tides which have flooded the cultivated areas, destroying crops. This problem has been compounded by local volcanic action and the removal of mangrove forest, an important habitat in absorbing the power of the sea.
