First-ever international conference on Basking shark conservation on the Isle of Man this weekend.

This weekend in the Isle of Man an international conference with experts from all over the world will discuss the possibility of formally protecting the Basking shark in British marine nature reserves. The meeting is to find out and identity conservation zones for the species with threats, such as, boat collisions and entanglements in nets on the rise and that the Basking shark fin still an “incredible value” in the Far East.  “The conference has stemmed from the realisation that Basking sharks are a global species and we need to work together as partners around the world, to focs our conservation effort more closely,” said Fiona Gell, wildlife and conservation officer in the Manx Government’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
