BTTP meets Chief Almir

Back To The Planet got the opportunity to meet Chief Almir in London as he prepares for Copenhagen.

Almir Narayamoga is the chief of the Surui tribe in the Amazon Rainforest, in Brazil. He has been campaigning for over 15 years to protect his native land from the logging industry. Last week he met with Prince Charles as he prepares for seminars he will deliver at the Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen in December. It was during this visit that Alan and Simon of Back To The Planet had the opportunity to meet with Chief Almir and learn more of his campaign to protect the rainforests of Brazil. Prince Charles has established the Prince’s Rainforests Project to raise awareness of deforestation and the need to protect these ancient landscapes.

With support from Google, the Surui tribe has documented areas cleared of forest and alerted authorities of illegal logging activities, they have also begun a reforestation programme and plan to plant 1 million trees over 10 years. The video below shows how the Surui tribe have used the tools provided by Google to fight back against the destruction of their land.
