Dame Ellen MacArthur goes green

After years of circumnavigating the globe in her yacht, Ellen goes green.

After spending two months in South Georgia in the south Atlantic Ellen had a epiphany whilst trying to highlight the plight of the albatross.

Even now that her record of sailing single-handed around the globe in 71 days has been broken by her rival, Francis Joyon, Ellen is focused on her new passion of living sustainably. She told Kirsty Young on Desert Island Discs that she wants to concentrate on stopping mankind destroying the environment rather than embarking on any more adventures for herself.  She now realises “how brutally selfish it is to go off sailing around the world, even when you are achieving your dream”. However she has been training herself whilst away on her trips as life onboard a small vessel is cramped at the best of times and you have to survive with the minimum of resources.  Ellen has started by building a house on the Isle of Wight designed on ecological grounds and pledges to continue to to fight for global sustainability.
