How filmmakers can go green
The film industry goes green with the Code of Best Practice for Filmmakers. In 2008 a collaboration between Filmmakers for Conservation, Centre for Social Media and the Centre for Environmental Filmmaking resulted in the production of guidelines for filmmakers to make the industry more environmentally responsible. Historically, filmmakers have played an important role in raising awareness of environmental issues around the world, though as an industry, due to travel and equipment requirements, it is not one of the greenest.
The Code of Best Practice for Filmmakers sets out provide a series of checklists which may be used by production teams to keep track of and reduce their carbon emissions and damage to the environment. These guidelines have been adopted by South West Screen, the organisation that supports and develops creative media industries in the South West. Back To The Planet’s Social and Environmental Policy covers much of the content of the checklists such as choosing recycled products, and using public transport where possible and we have used the checklists to expand on our efforts to reduce our environmental impact.
