Optimistic Outlook for Marine Fisheries
5 out of 10 fisheries that have been monitored are showing signs of success.
For 2 years, 21 scientists have been working on a detailed study on the combination of measures, such as, catch quotas, no-take zones and selective fishing gear to ascertain if the efforts to halt overfishing are showing signs of success. Initially they have been examining what the current trends are in the worlds fish stocks, together with the tools put in place to improve the overall numbers. The team added that although this is a step forward, as a large percentage of the world’s fisheries are still without a monitoring system, much work must still be done to stop the damage caused by overfishing.
